We've received several e-mails from users worrying about the "Check for Updates" feature that we've added to our software updates since May 2003. So we've prepared a little Q&A to explain how it works and why it's useful.
Yes. It's only turned on when you choose to have it enabled.
The news feature downloads a small news file from our Web site. This happens twice a month from our freeware and registered software, and about six times per month from trial versions. The news file is very small so it downloads quickly. Once the news file has been downloaded, it is compared with the previous version. If it is different, a window pops up and displays all relevant news items. The news window is not displayed if the news file hasn't changed.
No. News travels one way only. It is downloaded from our Web server to your computer. News items are then filtered locally according to the software version you are running. Then they are displayed in the News window as a list of links that you can click on (see screen shot below). Links to Web pages are opened in your default browser and links to files are downloaded through the news feature.
Here's an example of a news window taken from Easy Imager:

No. You must first click on a link in the news window to download it. Then, you must answer Yes when prompted to install it. You can also install the update later through Windows Explorer or another file manager.
Yes. You can disable automatic checking and still access news anytime you wish. When you check manually, the news window is displayed even if nothing has changed since you last checked.
Some download managers may take over this download process and interfere with normal operations. When this happens, temporarily turn off your download manager and try again. Another frequent problem is that a firewall is blocking access to the news server on the Internet.
Free updates for paid software will be available exclusively through the "News and Updates" feature.
